2001年1月にポールがヘザーとインドのゴアで休暇を過ごしている時に書いたバラード曲。アルバム『Driving Rain』にはマイナー調のブルースやロックに近い曲が多いが、この曲は典型的なポールのメロディアスなバラードである。
「この曲は'If you only knew'という歌詞に集約されているね。誰かに話し掛けるような曲なんだ。つまり、君が何を思っていても、僕の答えは'I do'、君を愛している、君が分かってさえいれば、僕はＯＫだよ、ということだ。これって、ある意味誰かに対してのコミュニケーションの１つだよね。」（ポール）
ポールは低いキーで歌って録音したデモテープをレコーディング時に持ってきたが、レコーディング時には２番から１オクターブ上げたボーカルに変更した。オクターブ上がる46秒くらいの時点で、ポールが息を吸っているのが分かるが、オーバーダブの段階でも敢えて消さなかったようだ。
オーケストラ・アレンジはプロデューサーのデビット・カーンが行った。オーケストラはコンピュータでサンプリングした音である。

「Heather」とは、もちろんポール・マッカートニーの現在の妻、ヘザー・ミルズのこと。
ある朝、ポールが朝食を取った後にピアノに座って、適当なフレーズを弾いていると、ヘザーがどのビートルズの曲を弾いているか訪ねたという。ポールはビートルズの曲ではなく今作っている曲だと説明したら、ヘザーがポールの作曲プロセスにいたく感動し、そばに置いていたディクタフォンで、ポールの弾くデモを録音したという。
後ほど、ヘザーがポールに何という曲か聞けば、ポールはまだ曲のタイトルを付けていなかったが、即座に「'Heather'という曲だよ。」と答えたという。
ポールが作った数バージョンのデモが１６トラックにミックスダウンされ、2001年3月2日に、ポールのギター、ベース、ラスティーのドラム、および、ストリングス、バイオリン、バックコーラスなどがオーバーダブされ、曲が完成した。
ポールにしては珍しく、前半部分がインストゥルメンタルで、後半になってからようやくボーカルが登場する。
1968年にドノバンとレコーディングした同名異曲が存在する。

2001年発売のアルバム『Driving Rain』からのファースト・シングル。歌詞の内容は、2002年に再婚したヘザーのことと、1998年に他界した前妻のリンダのことを歌っているようである。
「ああ、何てことだ。30年間も妻がいながら、こんなこと許されるんだろうか？ 僕は、こういうことを罪に思うような奴なんだよなあ。」（ポール）
この曲はポールが自宅のホームスタジオで作った数編のデモテープをエンジニアが組み合わせて作ったものである。
「この断片もあの断片も好きだから、ただ組み合わせてみたら一緒には出来ないだろうと思っていたけど、一緒にしたら良い感じになったんだ。」（ポール）
レコーディングは、プロデューサーのデビット・カーンに推薦されたミュージシャンが集まり、セッションを行い、ライブ録音したという。始めポールはピアノを演奏し、それからヘフナーのベースをオーバーダブしたという。
デモのボーカルが気に入っていたポールは、できるだけデモと同じ感じを出すようにボーカルを録音したという。
リンゴ・スターがこの曲を気に入り、リンゴ・スターの勧めで、ファースト・シングルとして発売したが、全くヒットしなかった。シングルカットされたので、ポールがスタジオでこの曲を演奏する姿を捉えたプロモーション・ビデオも作成されたが、あまりオンエアされなかった。
アルバムに収録されたバージョンは、オリジナルのデモに近いように、ポールのボーカルを全面に出すようにミックスされたが、シングルのカップリングには、プロデューサーのデビット・カーンのリミックス・バージョンが２種類収録された。
また、2001年10月20日の『The Concert For New York City』でライブ演奏したが、公式アルバムには収録されず、それ以降もライブで演奏されることはなかった。その時の音源とネット上で公開されたリハーサルの音源は、以下のブートで聴くことができる。

2001年9月11日に発生したニューヨークでの一連のテロ事件にインスパイアされてポールが作った曲。この事件で犠牲となったニューヨーク市の消防士と警察の家族への資金提供を目的にポールの提唱で2001年10月20日に開催したチャリティー・コンサート『The Concert For New York City』のために書いた曲でもある。このコンサートで初めて演奏した。
『The Concert For New York City』は、デヴィット・ボウイ、ボン・ジョヴィ、ビリー・ジョエル、デスティニーズ・チャイルド、エリック・クラプトン、バックストリート・ボーイズ、ザ・フー、ジェイムズ・テイラー、エルトン・ジョンなど、豪華スター達が出演した。
このチャリティー・コンサートでは、この曲を２度演奏。コンサート終了後はイギリスに帰国する予定だったがキャンセルし、すぐにニューヨークのスタジオに入り、エリック・クラプトンらと共にこの曲をスタジオ録音し、11月に発売したアルバム『Driving Rain』に急遽収録することになった。
イギリスでは、シングル「From A Lover To A Friend」とのカップリングで発売。アメリカではシングルとして発売した。またラジオ局配布用のプロモ用に、2分37秒に編集されたバージョンが配布された。
このチャリティー・コンサートを契機に、テロによるショックを受けたアメリカ国民を元気づけるために行った2002年のツアー「Driving USA」でもこの曲を演奏した。しかし、2002年11月のメキシコ・ツアーからは、この曲はセットリストから外れた。2001年12月オスロでのノーベル平和賞100周年記念コンサートや、2002年2月のＮＦＬスーパーボウル・プレショーなどの要所でも演奏している。
「9.11事件に対する人々の気持ちを後押しする曲だ。とてもシンプルな曲だけど、価値のあることだと思う。『自由な暮らしをすること』について、昔の歴史の中でも現代社会でもいいので、抑圧されることを考えてみよう。自分達の政府が間違っていると考えると、拷問を受けたり、罰を受けたりするような。だから僕は、自由に意見が発言できるような国に生まれてよかったと意識したいし、みんなに意識して欲しいんだ。」（ポール）

Driving Rain

ポールの最新アルバム（2001年発売）『Driving Rain』からのタイトル曲。ロサンゼルスの大西洋海岸の高速道路をヘザーと一緒にドライブした後に書かれた曲。曲作りの過程については、ポール自身が2002年のツアーのMCで語っている。
「僕らがアルバム『Driving Rain』をレコーディングしていたとき、ロサンジェルスにいたんだけど、必死にレコーディングして１日休暇を取ったんだ。折角イギリスから来たんだしね。いい天気になるぞ！って思って休暇を取ったら、雨が降ったんだ。どしゃぶりだった！ でもよかったんだ。大西洋海岸の高速道路に乗って、黒い小さなコルベットでラジオを聞きながらドライブしたんだ。とにかく、雨は降っていたけど楽しい日を過ごした。それで戻ってから、この曲が出来たんだよ。」（ポール）
また、ポールは曲を作った時のことをこう回想している。
「ある日の夕方、ピアノのあるところに座っていて、曲を書き始めたんだけど、その日はベースの部分が少し出来たところだったんだ。ロサンゼルスの家にはセキュリティーシステムがあって、声で知らせてくれるんだ。"Something's open!"（何かが開きました）ってな感じで。それを拝借したんだ。」（ポール） その歌詞とポールがヘザーと婚約した気持ちを重ねているかのようだ。
当初はバラードであった曲であるが、アレンジの途中でアップテンポとした。
2001年6月14日に開催された地雷撲滅のための慈善団体「Adopt-A-Minefield」が主催するコンサートで、アルバム発売前にも関わらず演奏した。アルバム発売後は、2002年のツアー「Driving USA」「Back In The U.S.」「Driving Mexico」「Driving Japan」で演奏した。2003年のツアー「Back In The World」では、途中の4月5日シェフィールド公演まで演奏されたが、ツアーの途中で体調を崩したため、それ以降はレパートリーから外れた。

ポールが息子のジェームスと共作したナンバー。２人が1997年にアリゾナに滞在していたときに書き始めたため、歌詞の内容から考えると、リンダに捧げられた歌であると推測できる。
2001年2月28日に、16トラックのアナログ・テープで録音し始め、それをDavid Leonardがオーバーダブのためにミックス・ダウンしたトラックに、ジェームスがリズム・ギターとリード・ギターを加えた。
ポールはこのレコーディングで、へフナーのベースとエピフォンのギターを使っている。
この曲のアウトテイクとしては、(1)2001年12月にレコーディングされたピアノ・デモ、(2)2001年12月11日にドイツのテレビ番組「Tros TV Show」のために再レコーディングされたバージョンが発見されている。
