ビデオゲーム業界は6カ月前、他の産業で減益減収が顕著になるなか、堅調な成長を遂げていた。消費者が60-70ドル台のゲームに飛びつくなか、1月の米ビデオゲーム売上高は10％増となった。こうしたゲームは家庭に何時間もの娯楽の時間をもたらす。
しかし、市場調査会社NPDグループによると、6月のビデオゲーム販売台数は前年同月比で過去最高の29％減となった。またゲーム機器の分野でも、米マイクロソフト（Nasdaq:MSFT）の「Xbox360」や任天堂（7974.OK）の「Wii」などは38％減となった。この急激な減少は、3月から始まった漸減的な売上高の落ち込みを経たもの。
この方向転換は米インターネット通販大手アマゾン・ドット・コム（Nasdaq:AMZN）などの企業にも波及している。アマゾンは先週、4-6月期の決算が不振となったのは、ビデオゲームの低迷が理由とした。トム・スクータク最高財務責任者(CFO)は電話会見で「ビデオゲームやゲーム機器の業界に減速傾向がみられる」と述べた。
この変化は、向こう数週間でさらに顕在化する公算が大きい。任天堂が30日に決算を発表する際、一部のアナリストは、Wiiの低迷やソフトウエアの売上高が予想を下回るとして減収を見込んでいる。8月に決算を発表する米ゲームソフト小売り大手ゲームストップ(NYSE:GME)も、精彩を欠く業績が予想されている。米ゲームソフト大手エレクトロニック・アーツ(EA)(Nasdaq:ERTS)やアクティビジョン・ブリザード(Nasdaq: ATVI) は8月初旬に決算を報告する際、さえない結果が見込まれるが、EAについては、「タイガーウッズPGAツアー10」などの新しいゲームの堅調さをもって有利な立場にある。
アクションゲームシリーズ「グランド・セフト・オート」で知られる米ゲームソフト大手テイクツー・インタラクティブ・ソフトウエア(Nasdaq:TTWO)のストラウス・ゼルニック会長は「われわれの製品の当初の受注は予想を下回る傾向がある」とした。同社は「バイオショック2」の発売延期で、今月初めに2009年通期利益見通しを下方修正した。
ビデオゲーム業界は、2009年通期の増収率が「2ケタ」となるよう期待してきたが、アナリストは、最近では2008年通期の110億ドルと比べ横ばいあるいは5％増と予想している。調査会社、エレクトロニック・エンタテインメント・デザイン・アンド・リサーチのアナリスト、ジェジー・ディブニック氏は「業界が成長すればうれしい」と述べた。
