ポール・マッカートニーが、米国議会図書館の選定による音楽賞〈Gershwin Prize For Popular Song〉を受賞することが決まった。
AP通信が伝えるところによると、授賞式は来年春にワシントンで開催される予定となっており、同じ時期には多くの有名ミュージシャンが参加するトリビュート・コンサートも計画されている。議会のメンバーであるジェイムズ・ビリントンは、今回のポールの受賞について「彼以上に、多くのジャンルのポピュラー・ソングに影響を与えたパフォーマーと作曲家は思いつかない」と賛辞を送っている。
アメリカのポピュラー音楽の基礎を築いた伝説的な作曲家兄弟、ジョージ&アイラ・ガーシュウィンの名前を冠し、今回で第3回目となる同賞では、過去にポール・サイモンとスティーヴィー・ワンダーが受賞を果たしている。
